Dendê and Band is bringing Carnival to Virginia Beach! This tropical, traditional-meets-funkadelic extravaganza will have you out of your seat and grooving to the sounds of Bahia, Brasil in a whole new way. This is not your mama’s folk music! Dende is a wildly skilled percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, educator, and multi-instrumentalist. Dendê & Band embodies a cross-pollination of deep roots in Samba de Roda and Candomblé blended with an eclectic palette like rumba, afrobeat and mbalax. Over the past two decades, Dendê & Band have performed at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK, Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles; the KW Latinfest in Canada; the Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia; the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia, Summerdance and Old Town School in Chicago the Lincoln Center Atrium in NYC among many others.
Dendê will also be hosting an eco-friendly instrument workshop in honor of Earth Day and the Virginia MOCA exhibit: Journey to Nature’s Underworld which explores our strained relationship with the environment.
Performances will take place at 10:30am and 12:30pm during the Family Fest which will run from 10am-2pm.

About Dendê:
Dendê Macêdo is a percussionist, singer, composer, bandleader, teacher, and multi-instrumentalist.
He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001, he’s been developing his solo career, splitting his time between the US and Bahia and working with his folkloric group Ologundê and his flagship band Dendê & Band.
