Description

Come learn about the formation of African American communities in Princess Anne County from the Civil War through the 1950s from historian Edna Hawkins-Hendrix.

Edna Hawkins-Hendrix is an author and local historian whose dedication has brought to light the rich and often overlooked history of Black communities in Princess Anne County, now known as Virginia Beach. With a passion for preserving stories of Black communities in Princess Anne County that might otherwise be forgotten, Hendrix authored Black History Our Heritage: A Pictorial History of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach, Virginia; has co-authored Black Law Enforcement Pioneers in Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach, Virginia with Deputy Chief Patrick Gallagher; and has collaborated with Dr. Joanne Lucas and Jacqueline G. Malbon to create the two-volume History of African American Communities in Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach. Ms. Hendrix lends her expertise to community organizations, including as a board member and historian for the Princess Anne County Training School and Union Kempsville High School Alumni and Friends Association (PACTS/UHKS AFA). Hendrix’s tireless community work has earned her many accolades and awards, and she continues to champion the preservation of local history.

This Lunch and Learn will take place at noon at the Lynnhaven House Colonial Education Center, 4409 Wishart Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23455
